Common Core Curriculum Standards
CCCS. Our comprehensive curriculum is experiential, cross-curricular, and aligned with, at present, fourth and fifth grade CCCS for: English / Language Arts, Reading for Literacy & Informational Text, Writing, Speaking & Listening, and Math; the Physical Health and Nutritional literacy components are aligned with the National Health Education Standards (NHES). However, because the national standards for Science, and even PE / Health, have yet to be implemented and fully utilized by all states, and in order to serve the states currently operating our SHAKTI Warriors’ program, we have aligned the curriculum to California and Illinois state specific standards for Science and PE / Health. As the national standards for all subject areas become fully implemented, we will adjust our alignment accordingly. Finally, we have also incorporated and aligned the Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) standards, as supported by the Collaborative for Academics in Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL), to all components of our curriculum.
Process for Determining Alignment. Our Director for National School Operations, Rosanne Harrison, DC-E.d.D, worked diligently to align all Shakti Warrior’s program components to the following national and state recognized standards:
1) Common Core Curriculum Standards for English Language Arts and Math;
(CCCS)(4th and 5th grades)
2) CA and IL state specific standards for Science and Physical Education;
(as there are not yet specific CCCS for these subject areas)
3) Social and Emotional Learning Standards (as developed via the Collaborative
for Academic, Social and Emotional Learning (CASEL));
4) National Health Education Standards (NHES);
5) Alliance for a Healthier Generation (AHG).
Using the definitions from each of the standard's objectives, the curriculum supports skill-set
development, foundational knowledge, and scaffolding toward higher-order thinking skills. The
alignment process, which includes experiential-based, interdisciplinary connections, yielded a
holistically integrated SHAKTI Warriors' program. The SHAKTI curriculum also incorporates
SAFE an Evidence-Based practice for Social and Emotional Learning programs.
